Bangladesh Urges India to Restrain Sheikh Hasina from Making Statements Against the Country

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Touhid Hossain, has stated that Indian authorities have been formally requested to prevent Sheikh Hasina from making statements against Bangladesh.

The statement comes in the wake of vandalism at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence, House No. 32 in Dhanmondi. Reports suggest that Hasina’s comments have sparked unrest in various parts of the country, leading to acts of vandalism.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday afternoon, Hossain confirmed that a written request has been sent to India. He further mentioned that the acting Indian High Commissioner has been summoned and informed of Bangladesh’s concerns.

When asked about the recent incidents of vandalism in Dhaka’s 32 No. area, Hossain said, "After some initial disturbances, the situation was gradually stabilizing. However, such incidents could have happened at any time, but they did not until now."

The Foreign Affairs Advisor reiterated that Bangladesh is awaiting India’s response regarding its request to prevent Sheikh Hasina from making controversial remarks.

"Today, we have once again issued a protest note regarding the situation of the past few days. Since the Indian High Commissioner is not present, I personally called the acting High Commissioner and urged them to stop this provocation," he added.

On relations with Pakistan, Hossain remarked, "If we remain steadfast, there is no benefit for them, and there is no significant gain for us in advancing relations with Pakistan."

He emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests while maintaining diplomatic ties with Pakistan as it does with other nations.

Regarding the resumption of shipping traffic with Pakistan, Hossain stated, "We will try to maximize our benefits from this arrangement."
